Margery S. Davidson, CPA

Business Growth

Margery has been a woman business owner for the past 18 years. Moving to New Jersey in 1977 she enrolled in Brookdale Community College as a way to meet people. She was quite surprised to find that she actually enjoyed learning and she continued to take classes, graduating from Brookdale with an Associates Degree in Business Administration. In 1981 she transferred to Rutgers University and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Accounting in 1983. She is now studying for a Masters of Science Degree in Taxation.

Margery opened her first business Davidson's Bookkeeping and Tax Service in 1983. Becoming an entrepreneur was not a surprising step for her to make. Margery comes from a family of small business owners. Her father was self employed with a home based business. Her brother and sister both own their own businesses and all five of her children have had small businesses of their own. Her husband was a home based business owner for more than twenty years. Three years ago he closed his business to work full-time with Margery in the tax department of her Certified Public Accounting firm.

While studying for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam Margery built her bookkeeping and tax business. She sat for and passed the exam given by the Internal Revenue Service to be Enrolled To Practice Before the IRS. With this accreditation she was able to expand her practice by representing clients in IRS tax audits. To become a licensed CPA she needed two years experience with a public accounting firm. Margery hired two employees to help keep the business running while she worked to fulfill the experience requirement for her license. After receiving her license she changed the name of her company to Margery S. Davidson, CPA.

Through the years, business consulting has become a large part of her practice. In 2000 Margery spun off this part of the practice into her new company Davidson's Business Development Team, Inc. She has taken courses in several areas of business development and has become a member of Results Accountants' Systems and Results Accountants' Network, an international organization that enables her to consult with other accountants involved in business development throughout the world.

Business and Professional

Margery gives her time to educate everyone from students to community groups and business organizations by speaking, participating on panels, and writing articles for several newsletters. She gives of herself to further the financial well being of others in a way that goes beyond mere business.

As a member of the Matawan/Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce, Margery served as President for two years and as Program Chair for one year. Through this service she was able to help build a stronger Chamber and bring in speakers who have helped members grow their businesses in many areas.

After becoming certified as a Woman Business Enterprise she has encouraged many of her women owned business clients to get started gathering the information required to become certified.

As a volunteer for the 2000 Census, Margery served as the Business Community Liaison for Aberdeen. In this capacity she was able to schedule presentations with the business community in order to educate them about the Census and the importance of it.

She is a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA) and the National Association of Tax Practitioners (NATP). Both of these organizations lobby for tax changes that will help business as well as individual taxpayers. Through NJSCPA she is a member of the Practitioners Forum.

Membership in NJAWBO/NAWBO has been one of the best things she has done for her business as well as for herself personally. Through this membership she has been able to meet other business women facing some of the same challenges. By the network she has formed she is able to share what she has learned and gained from others experiences. When she formed Davidson's Business Development Team, Inc. she was able in one afternoon to line up: Someone to develop her new logo, take care of all the printing needs, develop a new web site, compose a new biography, work on her public relations, and develop a data base. Where else but through the networking opportunities available through NJAWBO/NAWBO would anyone be able to accomplish this feat. Through membership, attending meeting, networking, and volunteering she has been able to know each business owner personally and trust that she will receive the expert service she is looking for.
